Classic Sandwiches with Tomato

This blog post is more of a love letter to my favorite summer meal than a “recipe.”Tomato sandwiches are one of the first foods I fell in love with, and I look forward to summer every year just for tomato sandwiches. So it’s time that I officially celebrate your beautiful simplicity and share it with everyone who hasn’t already had it. Tomato sandwiches are seriously my favorite thing. Never.

WHAT’S ON A TOMATO SANDWICH

There are so many different versions of tomato sandwiches, but I like the classic tomato sandwich, consisting only of juicy ripe tomatoes, creamy Mayonnaise, soft white bread and salt and pepper. That’s it!

The juice of the tomatoes combines with the creamy mayonnaise, salt and pepper to form a kind of vinaigrette that penetrates the bread and gives the most delicious combination of flavors and Textures. It’s so divine that I literally can’t eat just one. As soon as I skip the last bite, I always do the second!

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TOMATOES

This Sandwich is all about savoring the beautiful and delicious tomatoes of summer. If you can, buy locally grown tomatoes for the best flavor. Heirloom tomatoes are beautiful and delicious, but they will probably increase the price of your sandwich a little. If you can, visit your local farmers markets or neighbors who might be growing tomatoes to catch some of these fresh summer beauties!

WHAT KIND OF BREAD TO USE FOR TOMATO SANDWICHES

Many tomato sandwich lovers insist on soft white bread, but I am a little more flexible when it comes to bread. I like a little texture, so if my bread is very soft, I put it in the toaster just to brown it a little. I also really like whole wheat bread for tomato sandwiches, but I think I’m in the minority there. Most breads are suitable for tomato sandwiches, but I would try to avoid Super crispy or soft breads like a Baguette, as they overwhelm the soft texture of the tomatoes inside.

JUST REAL CREAM, PLEASE

Talk to any southerner and he will probably have very strong feelings when it comes to his favorite mayonnaise, especially for tomato sandwiches. Dukes and Blue Plate are both popular options, but a good old classic Hellmann’s Mayo is also good, imho! Bottom line, it should be creamy.
